Julia Wagemann

Biography

I am currently a Visiting Scientist at ECMWF, a PhD candidate at University of Marburg and a freelance Geospatial data consultant. Prior to starting my PhD and consultancy work, I worked at the European Space Agency and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). At ECMWF, I investigated how open meteorological and climate data can be accessed and analysed on-demand based on OGC services. This experience, in the intersection between ECMWF as a data provider and data users, showed me that the current potential of open Earth data is not fully exploited as users often struggle to discover, download, handle and process the data. Thus, I am very passionate about making open Earth data better accessible and moving away from pure download services to more on-demand cloud-based data services. My research focuses on how user-friendly, scalable data services can be set up based on cloud services and Big Data technologies. I regularly engage with data users and the geospatial data community. I run workshops on accessing and analysing open meteorological and climate data with Jupyter notebooks, Python and R. I was one of the main organisers of the OpenDataHack @ECMWF, coordinate the ECMWF Summer of Weather Code (ESoWC), a programme that promotes the development of weather-related open-source software and I am a co-founder of the Women In Geospatial network.
